From The Laird's House to The Duke's Pass & The Lands of Rob Roy

(Walk Grade B)

Low altitude walks of between 3-4 hours duration, over paths through forests.  However due to the nature of the Trossachs area, similar to the English Lakes, in all walks there will inevitably be ascents and descents over rough ground and it may perhaps be wet underfoot.

The Trossachs area comes alive with stories and personalities of our history as we take you to some of the most beautiful local landmarks. The Jacobites, Rob Roy, Queen Victoria and the Cunninghame Grahams are all included in this rich walking tour around the local area.

Arrive late afternoon on the Monday to cream tea in the lounge and a warm welcome from your tutor.

A thought for the day is given each morning, for all staff and guests who choose to take a few minutes reflection before beginning the day's activities.

Wednesday afternoon gives free time to explore on your own or visit a local attraction.

Spend the evenings in our lounge where we provide a variety of entertainment which could include a history of the house with its wonderful tale of politics poetry and passion, quizzes and an evening of Scottish music, or if you choose, just relax by the log fire.

Departure is after breakfast on the Friday.

Walking Itinerary

Tuesday - todays walk will take you through the grounds of Gartmore House to the Cunninghame Graham memorial, and Gartartan Castle a 12th century structure built into the walls of the walled garden. Continuing on forestry tracks through Loch Ard Forest, we will walk around the secluded Lochlan Spling - a small loch - before returning to Gartmore House via Aberfoyle and the old railway line.

Wednesday - this morning's walk will be along the eastern end of Loch Katrine following the path to Bealach nam Bo, the alleged route Rob Roy took when hiding his stolen cattle. A short drive over Duke's pass will take you back to Gartmore House.

Thursday - starting at Ledard Farm, the site of a 16C barn where Rob Roy is said to have recounted his battle experiences to fellow clansmen, you will walk to Loch Achray.  Following the route of Ben Venue, with a gradual ascent through woods, you will enjoy spectacular views of Loch Katrine, the Trossachs and across to Ben Lomond and the Arrochar Alps.
